The European Union condemned the 14 September industrial-site fire in Brașov in a statement delivered to the OSCE on 29 October and published on 30 October. It endorsed Romanian authorities’ attribution to a network coordinated from Russia and expressed solidarity with Romania. The statement described the affected site as next to defence manufacturer Carfil. [3]
Romania's intelligence service said on 26 October that it had identified a network coordinated from Russia which it believes caused a fire on 14 September at the Carfil industrial platform in Brașov, beside a state-owned arms manufacturer. SRI said the network's assigned targets included state and private weapons plants and other military-industrial sites in the region. [1]
Romanian organised-crime prosecutors are seeking the extradition of two Belarusian suspects detained in Germany and a Ukrainian suspect held in Poland over the arson case, Reuters reported. SRI said proceedings were continuing in Romania and with authorities in several European states. [2][1]
ContextThe attribution is an official Romanian allegation and has not been established by a final court judgment. Reuters said Russia's embassy in Bucharest could not immediately be reached and noted that Moscow has repeatedly denied accusations of sabotage against European states. [2]
The EU said its mechanisms against hybrid attacks could be used at the request of an affected member state. The statement did not announce that a specific mechanism had been activated in this case. [3]
Added the EU’s 29 October OSCE condemnation and solidarity statement, published on 30 October; retained the original incident date and attribution caveats.
