The Greek-owned, Liberian-flagged container ship Contship Jet sank in the Black Sea on 29 October, one day after three maritime drones struck it in Bulgaria's exclusive economic zone. Bulgarian authorities said there was no visible pollution in the first inspections, though the cargo included batteries, corrosive liquids, acids and industrial components. [1][2]
All 18 crew members — 14 Filipinos and four Ukrainians — were rescued and taken to Varna. Reuters-verified footage showed a drone approaching the ship before an explosion and the vessel listing; Bulgaria said a French patrol aircraft had warned it of the approaching drones but they could not be stopped. [1]
ContextNo party had claimed responsibility at the review cutoff. Maritime security firm Ambrey assessed that the surface drone was likely based on Russia's Murena-300S design, while a former Ukrainian naval officer told Reuters that it did not resemble Ukrainian models he knew. Those assessments do not establish who launched the drones. [1]
Added the vessel's sinking, the crew nationalities, the initial pollution and cargo assessment, and clearly attributed technical assessments while retaining unresolved responsibility.

Sea drones hit container ship off Bulgaria; crew rescued
Three maritime drones damaged the Contship Jet in Bulgaria's economic zone; all 18 crew members were evacuated safely and responsibility remains unclear.
Three maritime drones struck the Greek-owned, Liberian-flagged container ship Contship Jet in Bulgaria's exclusive economic zone on 28 October. Bulgaria's transport ministry said the vessel was sailing from Haifa to Constanța with 421 containers when it was hit off Cape Kaliakra.
All 18 crew members abandoned the badly damaged vessel and were rescued by Bulgarian naval and border-police ships. No injuries were reported. Official accounts placed the incident roughly 17 nautical miles east of Cape Kaliakra or about 21 miles southeast of Shabla.
ContextNo party had claimed responsibility at the review cutoff. Ukrainian officials have blamed Russia for earlier attacks on commercial shipping, while Moscow has denied involvement; those positions do not establish who launched the drones that hit the Contship Jet.
Romanian authorities restarted the search aboard and around the Wine Trader after weather disrupted earlier efforts. The Yara J, hit in a separate strike, was towed to Constanta with its crew safe.
